Yard of Ale was founded in 2007 by Alan Hogg. It is based at the Surtees Arms in Ferryhill, and brews 2-3 times a week. The Surtees, where Alan and his wife Susan are joint licensees, serves as the brewery tap, and is a former Durham CAMRA Pub of the Year. The brewery produces ales in a wide range of styles. Several are award-winning: Spring Triple Tipple won Best of Festival at Darlington’s Spring Thing beer festival in 2010, and One Foot In The Yard won Wear Valley CAMRA’s Beer of the Year two years running. Flamebearer won the Battle of the Beers competition at the 32nd Durham Beer Festival. In 2013, the brewery began to bottle its beers in-house, and it has plans to develop online sales.
