Each year, the members of Durham CAMRA are invited to nominate clubs for the Club of the Year competition. The most popular suggestions are put onto a shortlist, and voting is held to choose a winner and runner-up. . Clubs are judged on a range of criteria provided by CAMRA, including beer quality, clientele mix and sympathy with CAMRA aims and objectives. Chester-le-Street Cricket Club regained the award in 2015 after being toppled by Durham City Rugby Club for the previous two years. The winner of the Branch Club of the Year award also goes through as a candidate for the Regional Club of the Year award, competing with Club of the Year winners from the other branches in the region. In 2016 the Tanfield Lea WMC came third in the Regional competition. The recent winners are:
