Hill Island Microbrewery

Former Cathedrals brewer Michael Griffin is now in his second year brewing at Fowler's Yard, Durham City (home of the first ever Durham Beer Festival). His first brew, Miner's Gala Bitter at 3.7%, is very similar to the defunct Cathedrals Bitter, and is sometimes available at the Beamish Mary in No Place and the Ship Inn at Middlestone Village. Michael's beers should soon be available in the Fitzgerald chain of pubs on a regular basis.

The brewery often holds open days, and details of these can be found in the news feed and regional events diary.

For further information, please view the Brewer's MySpace page at www.myspace.com/hillisland.

As of the 20th May 2009, there is only Griffin's Irish Stout and some St Oswald's Xmas Ale left in bottles, but there should be a couple of bitters arriving in the bottle mid June. (Note that the bottles are sterile-filtered rather than bottle conditioned).

BLO reports

May 2010

Michael was busy mashing and adding hops today at Hill Island...terfific smell drifting down the yard.

He will be having another successful beer festival at the end of May, coinciding with the bank Holiday weekend. Two new beers will be on show; a dark stout named 'Belter' and a special 'Neptunes Gold'.

At the last festival a favourite was the St George beer. Business as usual on supply and general business.
